Berkeley Forest School

Collaborate with the land, and strengthen your family's relationship with nature, through play!

Forest Explorers hike at a child's pace, climb trees and large boulders, harvest food and flowers, investigate natural waterways, and observe animals in their habitats. We play, sing, dance, brew forest tea together, tell stories, make nature-art, and cook over an open fire.

This class emphasizes stewardship, natural science investigations, and nature connection. Parents and caregivers deepen their understanding of natural gross motor development, non-violent communication, and conscious caregiving practices.

To respect the relationships children and families build with one another, we do not offer drop-in sessions or tours for Forest Explorers. This class is held rain or shine. You will receive additional information, including driving directions and gear recommendations, prior to the first session.

What sorts of things happen at Forest Explorers?
Check out the Field Notes entry "Spring Forest Explorers Highlights" for some recent stories.

How old does my child need to be to attend Forest Explorers?
Children generally get the most out of the class after they’ve turned two. However, some children already have experience exploring outdoors with their families—those kids may be ready for Forest Explorers a few months early. For this reason, we don’t have a set lower age limit.

Is my child too old for Forest Explorers?
We also don’t have an upper age limit for Forest Explorers. However, the class is structured to address and support early childhood development, and is intended for families with toddler-to-preschool-age children.

Can I bring my child’s [uncle/aunt/grandma/grandpa/older sibling/younger sibling/etc]? Will that cost extra?
This is a family class, so anyone in the family is welcome to attend (within reason!) for no additional cost.

What is your refund policy?
Full refunds will be issued to families who cancel three weeks prior to the first day of the series or earlier. After that, a 50% refund will be issued. No refunds will be issued once the series begins.

To register for a Forest Explorers series, please contact us using the form below. Please tell us about your child, including his or her date of birth. You will receive additional information via email.
